Cleek is himself a reformed criminal and now helps Inspector Narkom of Scotland Yard in solving crimes in Clarges Street, London. "After due reflection over the question of disguise, Cleek determined for the present to revive that of Lieutenant Deland, and it was as that smart young officer that he once more took up his quarters in Clarges Street, in a house not very far from that which had been wrecked by Margot and her gang of Apaches. That they, too, were on his track was ascertained by Dollops, who traced them down to their lairs of Soho like a bloodhound scenting his quarry . . ." (Excerpt from "Cleek's Government Cases".) An unauthorised, utterly silly spoof of the Matrix, "The Matewix" is an adventure starring the ineffectual computer geek Newo. This book has all the action of the film, or more specifically it's a story of a nerd who couldn't get any action. Our hero has a rather bad speech impediment, which gets him into all sorts of twuble in a world that's not quite what it seems. "'If you take the Red pill, Newo, there is no going back. You will leave the Matewix and enter a world more real to you than you can possibly imagine. But Newo, if you take the Blue pill you will sustain an erection for up to 12 years. You must decide Newo'. Newo stared long and hard at the pills. Then reached out his hand, 'I'll take them both', he said and eagerly gobbled them down whole".

Swindlers All a Brief History of Government Business Frauds from Alexander Hamilton to AIG in PDF, EPUB, Tuebl, Mobi and Kindle:

In the wake of the Great Recession of 2007-2008, millions of hardworking Americans lost their jobs and their homes, their retirements, and their income. However, the corporations that caused the Great Recession lost nothing and were, in fact, given trillions of dollars by the government in an unprecedented financial bailout. While over 16 trillion dollars went missing, not a single Wall Street executive was punished or even charged with a crime. This book chronicles some of the government and business frauds carried out throughout US history. These swindles were carried out by such “Founders” as Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. Corruption was also at the core of the Andrew Jackson administration and played a key role in perpetrating the Panic of 1837, and government and business fraud was rampant in the construction of both the transcontinental railroad and the Panama Canal. Court rulings granting corporations the status of “legal personage” were part of a broader scam that extended greater constitutional and legal protections to corporations while denying Blacks and workers their own constitutional and legal rights. Government and business frauds of the 1920s played a prominent role in spawning the Great Depression of 1929, while funding and provisioning the US military has always been inundated with a wide variety of scams. In the early 1990s, government and business scams resulted in the collapse of the savings and loan industry, while the frauds of the early 21st century resulted in the Great Recession of 2007-2008. Today, all of the factors are in place to lead to yet another depression/recession which will be followed inevitably by a massive government bailout of banks and corporations.

Trumping Truth in PDF, EPUB, Tuebl, Mobi and Kindle:

When Kellyanne Conway, counselor to President Trump, coined the phrase “alternative facts” in January 2017, objectivity in public discourse—the long-held belief in a more or less agreed-upon set of verifiable truths—went into a tailspin. The use of alternative facts and narratives quickly became the go-to rhetorical strategy, especially among Trump’s administration and base. Rebuttals based on fact-checking and hard data were demoted to mere choices in a media bazaar where consumers are free to source their own versions of reality. This volume explores the social and political disruption accompanying the loss of faith in objectivity, along with reflections on the disregard for truth and honesty, both within the Trump Administration and in contemporary popular culture.

Capital and Capitalism in PDF, EPUB, Tuebl, Mobi and Kindle:

Capitalist societies need to undergo major change to provide for the material needs of all the people who work within the system, not just the 1 percent. They have become dysfunctional and need a different kind of orientation to continue in existence. Instead of creating wealth, which is what they are supposed to accomplish, they have created nothing but debt for the past several decades and are now in serious trouble with regard to finding the wherewithal to keep on functioning as viable societies that can provide job opportunities for their workers and the promise of a better life in the future for their citizens. The coronavirus pandemic has exposed just how many people live paycheck to paycheck and have not been able to accumulate any kind of savings. The 1 percent, meanwhile, have benefited greatly and have vastly increased their wealth over the past several decades. This book does not advocate the need to turn to a form of socialism, however, to give most workers a chance at a decent life for themselves. What is needed is a redefinition of capitalism to make it work for everyone. Capital and Capitalism seeks to uncover various myths about capitalism that hinder our ability to change the system and discuss the task of redefining capitalism by examining where neo-liberalism went wrong and what role restructuring the corporation along stakeholder lines can play in making capitalism more responsive to the entire society. It will be of interest to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of business and society, leadership, and business ethics.

The Trouble with Brunch in PDF, EPUB, Tuebl, Mobi and Kindle:

One of The Globe and Mail's Globe 100: Best Books of 2014 Every weekend, in cities around the world, bleary-eyed diners wait in line to be served overpriced, increasingly outr food by hungover waitstaff. For some, the ritual we call brunch is a beloved pastime; for others, a bedeviling waste of time. But what does its popularity say about shifting attitudes towards social status and leisure? In some ways, brunch andother forms of conspicuous consumption have blinded us to ever-more-precarious employment conditions. For award-winning writer and urbanist Shawn Micallef, brunch is a way to look more closely at the nature of work itself and a catalyst for solidarity among the so-called creative class. Drawing on theories from Thorstein Veblen to Richard Florida, Micallef traces his own journey from the rust belt to a cosmopolitan city where the evolving middle class he joined was obliviousto its own instability and insularity. The Trouble with Brunch is a provocative analysis of foodie obsession and status anxiety, but it's also a call to reset our class consciousness. The real trouble with brunch isn't so much bad service and outsized portions of bacon, it's that brunch could be so much more. 'At the crux of it, Micallef's issue with brunch is a lack of self-awareness, and his book is essentially a call to arms to consider the implications of one's actions, even for something as innocuous as meeting friends for eggs and mimosas.' - Bookslut Praise for Shawn Micallef: 'As Toronto grows into a more mature, more compelling city, a new group of non-academic, street-smart urbanists has emerged to appreciate it - with-it young writers, architects and men and women about town who love big cities and see things in Toronto that most of usmiss. Shawn Micallef is one of the sharpest of this sharp-eyed breed.' - Globe and Mail 'A smart and intimate guide to the city that makes you feel like an insider from start to finish.' - Douglas Coupland [on Stroll]
