Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Chemnitz (Anglistik / Amerikanistik), course: Hauptseminar: Postcolonialism in the Metropolis, language: English, abstract: The 20th century is often referred to as the century of rising cities and of an urbanisation of society due to factors like the Industrialisation, which had a tremendous influence on society. In the beginning 21st century, those developments have even gained in speed and dimension, while further impacts and consequences of this process can only vaguely be anticipated. Moreover, the term ‘globalisation’ can literally be found at every corner. As a result of this long-lasting trend, huge metropolises have been constructed all over the globe. One of them, namely London, will be in the centre of this term paper. Yet, the focus will lie more on some individuals than on the great mass of people living in such a city, as I will examine the portrayal of the main protagonists of the movie titled Dirty Pretty Things (2002), directed by Stephen Frears. I am going to analyse the movie, which must be seen just like any other literary genre, with the focus on its content. The drama Dirty Pretty Things portraits the faith of undocumented – and hence illegal – immigrants to Great Britain and their gloomy everyday-life with an ever insecure future of being allowed to stay in their chosen residence or not. Always hiding and being forced to adapt to other lifestyles with different customs, traditions, or a different language – or generally speaking, another culture – their identity is put into question. Being deeply despaired and seeing no other chances for an improved life, some even risk to sacrifice a kidney for the opportunity of a passport, which is the main issue of Dirty Pretty Things. Can the protagonists Okwe and Senay cope with those difficult circumstances? And how does their identity develop in such an e

Two wildly different women--one a grifter, the other an heiress--are brought together by the scam of a lifetime in a page-turner from the New York Times bestselling author of Watch Me Disappear. "Pretty Things is awesome. Simple as that. I loved every page. Janelle Brown is your new must-read author."--Harlan Coben, New York Times bestselling author of Run Away Nina once bought into the idea that her fancy liberal arts degree would lead to a fulfilling career. When that dream crashed, she turned to stealing from rich kids in L.A. alongside her wily Irish boyfriend, Lachlan. Nina learned from the best: Her mother was the original con artist, hustling to give her daughter a decent childhood despite their wayward life. But when her mom gets sick, Nina puts everything on the line to help her, even if it means running her most audacious, dangerous scam yet. Vanessa is a privileged young heiress who wanted to make her mark in the world. Instead she becomes an Instagram influencer--traveling the globe, receiving free clothes and products, and posing for pictures in exotic locales. But behind the covetable fa ade is a life marked by tragedy. After a broken engagement, Vanessa retreats to her family's sprawling mountain estate, Stonehaven: a mansion of dark secrets not just from Vanessa's past, but from that of a lost and troubled girl named Nina. Nina's, Vanessa's, and Lachlan's paths collide here, on the cold shores of Lake Tahoe, where their intertwined lives give way to a winter of aspiration and desire, duplicity and revenge. This dazzling, twisty, mesmerizing novel showcases acclaimed author Janelle Brown at her best, as two brilliant, damaged women try to survive the greatest game of deceit and destruction they will ever play.

Domestic Sluttery in PDF, EPUB, Tuebl, Mobi and Kindle:

Many women would love to have the domestic goddess thing nailed, to waft around vintage fairs and antique markets for collectable items to furnish their houses with, and to be able to spend all day preparing the ultimate dinner party. But quite frankly women are too busy – working, going out and having fun – to make their lives ‘just so’. But that doesn't mean that their homes aren't important; their homes are as precious as their time The Domestic Sluttery website was created to show women that it is possible to have a gorgeous home while unapologetically cutting a few corners. The book is a logical expansion from the blog, full of lifestyle tips and with a more in-depth look at home interiors (Hiding the Evidence, Design Porn etc.); food and drink (e.g., Veggie not Virtuous, Baking for Beginners); style and beauty (Fashion Lust, Crafty Clothes etc.); and living (e.g., Fabulous and Thrifty, Sluttery Travels). The word ‘sluttery' is used deliberately. It goes back to the traditional use of the word 'slut’ – being slovenly, a little messy – which can be a very good thing; it's freeing. This isn’t a lifestyle guide for Stepford Wives. those kind of aspirations aren't realistic any more. Instead, Domestic Sluttery offers an aspiration to live life to the full but with permission to make mistakes, to accept that you’re not perfect. Instead of compromising on fun, Sian Meades and her domestic sluts will teach you the quick and easy ways to do domestication on the hop. And will reveal how to make a damn good cocktail!

Screening Strangers in PDF, EPUB, Tuebl, Mobi and Kindle:

Yosefa Loshitzky challenges the utopian notion of a post-national "New Europe" by focusing on the waves of migrants and refugees that some view as a potential threat to European identity, a concern heightened by the rhetoric of the war on terror, the London Underground bombings, and the riots in Paris's banlieues. Opening a cinematic window onto this struggle, Loshitzky determines patterns in the representation and negotiation of European identity in several European films from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, including Bernardo Bertolucci's Besieged, Stephen Frears's Dirty Pretty Things, Mathieu Kassovitz's La Haine, and Michael Winterbottom's In This World, Code 46, and The Road to Guantanamo.
